Seaton Delaval Hall is one of the most important historic houses in Britain and among only a few remaining country houses designed by Sir John Vanbrugh. As well as being of historic and cultural importance, the Hall and Estate provide acres of countryside - gardens, parkland and woodland walks that all act as a ‘green lung’ to the very large communities of Tyneside and south east Northumberland.

    Situation

The future of Seaton Delaval Hall and Estate is currently under threat. The National Trust has launched an urgent acquisition appeal to raise £6.3 million by the end of 2008 to protect the future of this magnificent place. If this money is not raised, the Estate will be offered for sale on the open market and is almost certain to become fragmented. This remarkable building, vital green space and community resource will be lost to the public forever. Through tourism and other boosts to the economy, the estate could once again play a lead role in the region, bringing jobs and development to this part of the North East to help the area thrive. As a visitor experience, Seaton Delaval Hall offers a unique insight into 1,000 years of English history as lived by a family touched by both genius and eccentricity. If Seaton Delaval Hall, gardens and grounds once more become the hub of the community, the possibilities are endless. The romantic and evocative central hall, for example, could once again become a magnificent theatrical backdrop for plays, concerts and exhibitions.
