Listen Up! gives children with little or no access to classical music the opportunity to build listening and musical skills and perform alongside a professional orchestra. The project is based on a commissioned educational piece of music for Aurora Orchestra and up to 300 children in years 4- 6 with no necessary background knowledge in music.

    Situation

This project will be planned and delivered by Aurora instrumentalists and Da Capo Foundation staff working together. Over a term, we will make five skills-building visits to each school. Skills will be taught using the mature and tested Da Capo curriculum, which draws on Kodaly and Dalcroze methods and is carefully structured around musical, educational and child development principles. All Da Capo activities centre on a philosophy of voice-based music-for-all where every child's response matters. Our project will be lead by experienced Da Capo staff who will ensure that skills are taught in rigorous, comprehensive and progressive steps. Four Aurora instrumentalists will also be part of each visit, providing children with outstanding live music, a wide range of instruments and the experience of working with young, talented musicians. The project culminates in a day of workshops in a local venue (Saint John's, Smith Square for Westminster and Lambeth projects) with a final performance from all schools involved, alongside every member of Aurora Orchestra, led by Aurora’s principal conductor, Nicholas Collon. Other year groups from the schools as well as children from other local schools will be invited to attend. All of these children will also have the opportunity to contribute to the performance.
