The Salvation Army Haven Community Project-Portsmouth

Intergenerational Furniture Renovation Project

We want to establish a small workshop which will enable us to renovate secondhand furniture which can then be used to support our Furniture Project. The idea is that we can establish this as an intergenerational project bringing together older people with relevant skills and young people who are keen to try develop their own skills and hopefully go on to learn a trade.

We often have to turn down donations of furniture because it needs repair or renovation. Our idea is to creat the capacity through this project to undertake what is needed to help us recycle this furniture. We hope that being part of this project will encourage the young people involved to learn new skills and go on to improve their life chances. In terms of referrals we envisage linking with local hostels and agencies working with young people who are not engaged in Employment or Training. What we lack is the finances to purchase the equipment required and to employ a part/full time employee to run the project.
