This project is currently running as a pilot, for which funding runs out in May 2008 – we are desperately seeking funding to enable us to continue this work. It seeks to reduce crime as a result of reducing the likelihood of becoming a perpetrator and victim - including violent crime, mugging, theft and sexual assault - and has been running for 2 years as a pilot across six of the highest crime boroughs of London.

    Situation

This safety project works with some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people in those boroughs most affected by youth crime. It works with children and young people to challenge their perceptions of crime and safety. It breaks down social barriers and encourages a community approach to reducing crime. It equips young people with the skills, knowledge and strategies they need to avoid and defuse violence and aggression. It empowers young people to deal with issues such as gang and weapon culture and demonstrates how their own behaviours can lead to violence and aggression. The approach is pro-active and innovative, using methods such as film recordings, graffiti walls and messageboards to allow children and young people to have direct input into the project and the issues it deals with. The work is co-ordinated by an experienced youth worker whi us assisted by trained volunteers and peer educators – young people who themselves have been trained to deliver personal safety sessions to other young people in schools and youth clubs. With future funding of £114,595 over two years, we would be able to expand the project into a further 6 boroughs. At the end of the second year, we plan to carry out a full external evaluation of the project to ascertain its replicability for other areas in the UK. Full project plan, two year budget and audited charity reports available on request.
