We aim to reduce the levels of loneliness and social isolation amongst older people. This project will help by supporting us to reach an additional 300 older people; assisting them to stay independent, improve wellbeing and develop community connections through our Live at Home services.

Situation

The 2011 Census figures show that 2.9 million aged 65+ (England and Wales) live alone and recent Age UK research suggests that over 1 million people go for over a month without having a meaningful conversation with a friend, family member or neighbour. The UK has an ageing population. As the prevalence of loneliness is strongly linked to older age, this is a key issue for both society and individuals. By reducing loneliness and isolation, we can have a major impact in this area.

Solution

We support older people to regain independence and lead more active and fulfilled lives, enabling them to remain living at home for longer. We focus on improving wellbeing by focusing on the whole person – mind, body and spirit. Members can choose from a wide variety of services, clubs and activities based on their needs. These range from 1:1 befriending which enables a friendship based on companionship, trust and advice to form – through to strength and balance classes enjoyed as a group.
