500,000 young people and families in the UK are affected by autism. Some find joining in regular cultural activities, such as attending the theatre, difficult. Challenges such as sensory sensitivity and a lack of understanding of social protocols affect their experience. Very few artistic companies in Britain provide programmes for this audience. The lack of arts performances and bespoke workshops/residences for those with autism excludes them from experiencing high quality arts and culture.

Theatre and art have shown to benefit autistic children by capturing their imagination and helping expand their use of language, gesture and story. OPENING OUT brings bespoke performances and workshops/residencies for children with autism, and their families, to participate in.
