Due to their age, certain parts of St Michael’s much-loved building are difficult to maintain. if left, these will have a detrimental effect on the exemplary levels of palliative care provided to a large community. The Hospice is entering its 21st Anniversary year (2008) with plans to make extensive improvements to its facilities, thereby ensuring this invaluable resource is fit for purpose for another 21 years and beyond. Our plans are both exciting and essential, designed to enhance patient services, offer better facilities, provide greater outreach, improve accessibility and, crucially, secure our future.

    Situation

Patients, their relatives and carers, staff and volunteers will benefit directly from a range of improvements including: universal access and level flooring, new passenger lift, new bed lift, additional treatment rooms and opportunities for outpatient clinics, a larger nurses’ base designed for multi-functionality and a purpose-built kitchen facility. Emphasis is on people and services rather than buildings, on offering patients the highest level of care and our staff and volunteers the best possible working environment. Work will be carried out sensitively and in phases by contractors who have experience of working within healthcare environments. The project will commence in October ’08 with completion expected in 2010.
