More than 1.1 million children in the UK have a mental health problem but sadly young people are often not aware they have a recognised problem and feel like they are suffering alone. Recent studies undertaken by Mind last year highlighted a lack of support and information specifically designed available for young people and so, Mind redesigned a booklet on self-harm to make it work for young people.

    Situation

Our booklets have been a great success with over 7,000 copies ordered in the last 6 months for schools, colleges, libraries, and NHS Trusts, in addition to those distributed by local Mind associations. “Thank you so much for everything you sent me on self–harm. I am finding it all most interesting and I don’t feel alone so much.” 17 year old service user, May 2008 Continuing the success of the self-harm booklet Mind is planning to produce a full range of publications specifically for young people. With your support the series will be launched with a booklet on depression followed by advice and support on bullying and on caring for family and friends with mental health problems. Mind writes and publishes a range of factsheets and booklets on mental health related issues, many of which have won awards. We distribute over 460,000 publications a year, providing one of the widest and most comprehensive sources of information to the public. Subjects covered by our information leaflets include: • Looking after your personal finances • Housing and mental health • Legal briefing: Disability Discrimination Act • Employing people with mental health problems • Staying in employment • Mind guide to physical activity • Mind guide to food and mood • How to parent when you are in crisis Subjects covered are updated regularly and there are opportunities to work with Mind in publishing new information booklets. It costs £13,100 to rewrite a Mind booklet for a young audience, including consulting groups of young people, redesigning and writing the booklet, printing, marketing and distribution. Help us help young people living with mental health problems.
