    Situation

Awareness of this hidden disability is low and families of children and young people affected often face real difficulties in obtaining clear and practical information and support. Whilst other sources of information have been developed, people still prefer to talk through their problems with somebody who understands what they are facing, and this is where the helpline meets a real need. The parents / carers who contact the service are often at their wits end about what to do for the best.

    Solution

The helpline staff and volunteers offer a listening ear, empathise with callers, and help guide them through the processes necessary to get a diagnosis, get a statement of special educational needs, attend a tribunal etc. to ensure their child gets the support they require. This level of 1 to 1 support at vital points in a child’s development can make a real and lasting difference to their life. The information, help and support given by the helpline is supported by a website and publications.
