Over the coming three years Afasic will be working to increase the active participation of young people affected by the hidden disability of speech, language and communication impairments; both within Afasic and the wider civic society. As a result of their problems with communication these young people are often left on the periphery, they can become isolated from their local community, and do not get the opportunity to have their views heard. Afasic wants to change this and it is one of the key goals within our new three-year strategic plan.

    Situation

This project will involve identifying groups of young people across the UK and organising consultations with them to establish their views on a range of topics (which would include things like ‘what are their hopes, expectations and fears, what barriers do they face and what support do they need to overcome these’). Afasic will also look to establish a young persons council with representatives from across the UK to take a more formal part in helping to guide the future work of the organisation. Afasic will develop training to help these young people to self-advocate, and will organise activities to encourage their participation. The project will help to ensure that the ongoing work of Afasic is better informed, that these young people will ‘have a voice’, and that their isolation will be reduced. We see this as an important area that needs addressing and one that could have a significant impact.
