Afasic operates a unique helpline service that provides friendly and accessible support for parents and carers of children and young people with speech, language and communication impairments, as well as teachers and other professionals dealing with them. The Afasic helpline covers all areas of the UK and is staffed by a small team of paid and volunteer staff, all of whom have received comprehensive training, which is ongoing, and with the volunteers all being parents of children affected by this disability.

    Situation

Whilst other sources of information have been developed (such as websites and publications), people still prefer to talk through their problems with somebody who understands what they are facing, and this is where the helpline service meets a real need. The parents / carers who contact the service are often at their wits end about what to do for the best. The helpline staff and volunteers offer a listening ear, empathise with the caller, and help guide them through the processes necessary to obtain a diagnosis, get a statement of special educational needs, attend a tribunal etc. to ensure their child gets the support they require. This level of one to one support at vital points in a child’s development can make a real and lasting difference to their lives. Afasic has been awarded the Community Legal Services Commission Quality Mark for giving clear legal information on speech and language issues affecting children and young people. The Quality Mark was developed to help people gain trust in the legal system and is awarded only to organisations that pass regular quality checks carried out by the Legal Services Commission. Afasic is also a member of the Telephone Helplines Association. The helpline service is a vital source of information, help and support for families who have children affected by this hidden disability. The information and knowledge gained from this service empowers the parents to help their child at home, to seek the professional help required, and to access appropriate levels of support to meet the specific needs of their child. Ultimately this will help to ensure that the children and young people receive support at as early a stage as possible, so giving them greater opportunities to make the most of their education, develop their full potential, improve their life chances and enable them to take a more active role in their local community rather than face isolation from it.
