Trailblazers fight social injustices experienced by young disabled people in the UK. They work to ensure that young disabled people gain access to education, employment and the services they require, raise awareness on key issues and provide a mentoring, peer-to-peer support and advice network.

    Situation

The project will address five common issues that exist in communities of young disabled people: • limited opportunities to gain work experience or employment • limited social opportunities beyond their immediate family • limited knowledge of the support and information available • limited experience of finding potential volunteering opportunities • limited knowledge of coping strategies to overcome obstacles in applying for financial support for independent living, access to work, etc.

    Solution

The Trailblazers' project aims to empower individuals to find solutions to the challenges that affect them, through regional group meetings allowing young disabled people to share their experiences and ideas with like-minded people; through work experience opportunities made available by the charity both internally and externally, and through developing skills through campaigning. Trailblazers work with businesses and service providers to find solutions to the problems faced by disabled people.
