    Situation

Our students have complex learning difficulties compounded by other disabilities including deafness, deafblindness, autism, rare disorders and physical disabilities. A large proportion have mental health problems. When students join the Post 16 part of the school they often lack even the most basic skills around 'looking after themselves' eg simple cooking and meal preparation, cleaning and washing clothes.

    Solution

The new room will teach students how to: prepare snacks, learn about food hygiene and how to store food safely. They will learn to use a washing maching and an iron safely and learn to take pride in themselves. It will also support Vocational Studies by providing a venue where students will run a weekly cafe. These skills will support them in the future so that they can live as independenlty and confidently as possible in the community.
