This house is for women who have suffered domestic violence and abuse over a long time and need special individual care to recover from this as well as treatment for substance misuse – we provide 24 hour care and support for all residential clients. Our current house is too small, we need to expand to meet the waiting list for places. Clients come from all over the UK.

    Situation

We would like to provide 16 residential places for women. We are looking for a substantial detached town house with some garden within 20 miles of Stroud. We intend funding the purchase of this through a mix of fundraising, our own resources and bank loan. The project is budgeted at £1,300,000 with a fundraising requirement of £800,000 to include capital purchase, alterations to the building and furniture and fittings. At Nelson Trust we have developed a unique, gentle programme of treatment to confront the trauma in these women’s lives in a women only environment. This gives them the confidence to persevere in the treatment programme for substance misuse, enabling them to join the main treatment programme, and giving them a much greater chance of making a full recovery. Those who are parents and make a full recovery are then able to care for their children properly. Increasing the number of residential places would allow us to make better use of the staff who provide 24 hour care and to offer more therapeutic and support services to residents. Many of the clients who come to us have dropped out of school and are physically very unfit. Some are homeless and have been out of work for a long time. In addition to treatment for substance misuse, clients take part in Adult Education classes, workshops to acquire practical skills, life skills and discover creative talents. They go on Outward Bound expeditions, take part in sports and voluntary work and learn to trust and co-operate with other people. These activities fill the void of addiction and help them become contributing members of the community. Clients from the Women’s House take part in all these activities. They are supported by Resettlement and Taper Care at the end of their treatment. Nelson Trust also provides information and support for families who have a substance misuser.
