Turnaround offers opportunities to improve life chances for some of the most vulnerable young people in Gloucestershire. The programme works with 13 to 16 year olds, whose problems include lack of engagement with education and substance misuse. Many of the target group are also likely to be involved in offending behaviour or be at risk of offending. Over a short period the programme offers the opportunity for groups of young people to re-evaluate their lifestyle, assess the opportunities available to them and learn skills that will assist them to integrate back into education and contribute positively to their community. The therapeutic content, addressing the young person's substance misuse issues, is interwoven with learning experiences. Emotional, familial and interpersonal issues are also addressed. Specialist counselling is available at all times to the young people on the programme. Part of the programme is a supported, planned reintegration back into learning. The young person stays within their home environment while attending the course. The educational and psychological benefits young people gain during their time at Turnaround continue to impact their lives long after completing the programme. The annual budget for these courses (3 courses/year) is £223,000 p.a. with start up costs of £50,000
