The Bereavement Service's aims are to provide specialist bereavement support and counselling to adults, children and young people in Hartlepool and east Durham. We help individuals manage the impact of the death of a loved one, by expressing their grief in a way which is appropriate to them.

    Situation

Initial research showed the average waiting list for referral to bereavement counselling by local GP's is 16 weeks. Psychological and emotional support for individuals, their families and carers, during the palliative care journey and beyond into bereavement, has been highlighted as an essential component of palliative care by the 2008 End of Life Care Strategy.

    Solution

We aim to improve the mental health and well being of all adults and young people who have been placed in a vulnerable position by the loss of someone close to them. This is a community based service which works with individuals from all over the region, without which many individuals would not receive the support they require in a timely manner or would have to travel extensive distance to access alternative services.
