Situation

It is estimated that there are at least 100,000 people in London coping with the long term effects of a severe brain injury. Brain injury survivors are some of the most vulnerable people in our community. They are faced with a complex range of cognitive, behavioural and physical problems which prevent them from coping with everyday tasks, maintaining relationships or returning to work. People lose their independence and self-esteem, become depressed and isolated.

Solution

Music has always been an important part of life at Headway and gives opportunities for self-expression and for the development of close relationships within groups, reduce isolation. Musical activities allow survivors to develop old skills and discover new talents, which can raise confidence and improve self-esteem. During the last year, members have indicated that music activities should be a priority for the future so we have employed dedicated Music Co-ordinator to develop this project.
