    Situation

The group most likely to acquire a brain injury, especially as a result of road traffic accident or assault, is young men between the ages of 15 and 29. As a Headway group we realised that our other services did not cater for most young people and so, after a consultation with a group of about 8 young people, we launched the Younger Persons' Group. The aim is to provide a forum for young people (16-30) to be able to offer each other peer support, to decide on their own activities and discussion topics and encourage them to think positively about their future. We also expect that, over time, they will be able to come to terms with their new situation and improve their self esteem. The group meets once a month on a saturday and is facilitated by one staff member and another member of staff/volunteer. The cost of supporting the staff member, money for outings and training opportunities is £7,000 and we expect at least 30 young people to benefit over the course of the first year. We expect there will also be a knock-on benefit for family members as the young person becomes better abe to come to terms with this life changing injury.
