There is a well-known saying in sub-Saharan Africa “A child with a full tummy will sleep in peace, even if it is under a tree”. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been torn by fighting for years and as ever, the ones who suffer most are the innocent children. Our small feeding programme is based at Goma where the fighting is at its fiercest; it is simple, immediate and effective. Since July 2007 at 5pm every day our women volunteers cook a meal for the children orphaned by the conflict. When the fighting was at its worst in November and December 2008 we were the first into the camps, feeding the displaced children.

    Situation

It costs us just under £1 to feed a child for one week; a donation of £5,000 would enable us to feed a further 100 children for 12 months. Can you help? We will be pleased to provide our latest audited accounts. Other WMF programmes in Africa include the Children’s Mobile Clinic treating over 30,000 sick children each year, the Mobile Surgical Unit performing over 1,000 operations deep in the African bush, the provision of ARVs for children suffering with AIDS and in partnership with UNICEF a programme targeting the reduction of transmission of the HIV virus from Mother to child at birth.
