Situation

The Learn2Live Programme delivers workshops twice weekly with young people referred from a local Pupil Referral Unit (PRU). All the young people from the PRU have been excluded from mainstream education, and several are involved in criminal activity. All of the young people suffer from poor personal and social skills, and the majority are below their expected achievement levels for the core National Curriculum subjects. Without quality, targeted intervention the prospects for the majority of these young people are very low, and few will achieve meaningful qualifications and develop the personalities to progress into further and higher education and ultimately reach their potential both socially and in the employment market. The aim of these workshops is to support the young people’s personal and social development by focusing on areas including working as a team, building self-confidence and communication skills, developing positive stable relationships and giving the opportunity for new experiences through off-site trips and activities. Thursday sessions employ a variety of methods including developing performance skills and imagination, team activities and lateral thinking exercises. On Friday’s the young people are taken on trips to expose them to some of the history and different cultures of London and to broaden their horizons and aid their relationship development. Trips undertaken include HMS Belfast, Science Museum, Urban Golf and Battersea Fire Station. In addition the young people have been engaging in a variety of team sports including football, basketball, badminton and rounders. The young people’s development has been shown by their increased confidence, improved communication skills with peers and adults, greater respect for people different to themselves, improvement in the ability to build and sustain meaningful friendships and improvement in time keeping. In addition a large number of the group displayed good acting and improvising skills along with increased confidence and a greater ability to work together. Ultimately a small number of our young people have returned to formal education.
