Leuchie House is the only MS respite care facility in Scotland. One of the main aims of Leuchie is to promote independence, maximise mobility and provide stimulation. It is a proven centre of excellence for people with multiple sclerosis. Although the bedrooms were upgraded 8 years ago, this was very superficial due to severe budget restraints. Currently the rooms are not “fit for purpose”, as they are of a domestic standard rather than what is required to suit current legislation and what is best for the complex needs of our guests.

    Situation

People with MS can require highly intensive and complex care due to their high dependency. For quality of life, it is a much better situation if the person with MS is cared for at home rather than long-term residential care. However, this home situation can be stressful, isolating and onerous. In situations like this, good quality respite care is very important for people with MS and their carers. Leuchie House provides this high quality care and is the only MS respite care facility in Scotland. We provide at Leuchie 540 holidays per year for people with MS and 84 carers. Leuchie provides 24-hour nursing care in a fun holiday environment. In terms of the Society’s Resources, respite care is by far our biggest area of activity. In 2006, 39% of the Society’s unrestricted income will be spent supporting Leuchie. There are 12 bedrooms, over 2 floors, specifically for people with MS at Leuchie; 8 doubles and 4 singles. The 12 bedrooms were superficially upgraded 8 years ago under severe budget restraints and are now proving to be inadequate. Currently the rooms are not “fit for purpose”, as they are of a domestic standard rather than what is required to suit current legislation and what is best for the complex needs of our guests. This current standard creates unnecessary risks re cross-infection, fire and comfort etc. Many of our guests have complex needs – we need consistency throughtout our respite care facility because; 1) our guests who have cognitive impairment need to feel they are in a safe and comfortable environment 2) nursing processes need consistency of facilities in each room Refurbishment of the bedrooms will enhance our guests’ quality of stay. It will also enable the MS Society Scotland to realise expenditure savings, which will allow us to channel saved funds into more facilities for our guests’ comfort and care.
