The WLAC Children & Youth Programme aims to address the causes of emotional and mental health difficulties in children’s lives at an early stage through preventive work. This deals with the problem before it becomes entrenched. Uniquely, we work with the whole family using a range counselling and preventive therapy services in individual sessions and also school-based counselling peer groups.

    Situation

reasons behind the project: Although the boroughs of Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea count as the most affluent in the country, within them exist pockets of severe deprivation and poverty. We work with families on low income, faced with difficulties which negatively impact on the life chances of their children. We work with children and their families affected by poverty, domestic violence, sexual abuse, mental health issues such as self harming, serious depression, trauma through rape or war, clients who have been in the criminal justice system, or who have anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, Aspergers, elective mutism, and recovery from substance abuse. details on project end goals: 1. Being healthy: Children & Young People and families in high need groups (such as low income, BME, single parent families, and those affected by mental health issues or domestic violence) are accessing specialist preventive and early intervention counseling and therapy. This will lead to their improved emotional and social well being. 2. Staying safe: Children and families in high need groups (such as low income, BME, single parent families, those affected by mental health issues or domestic violence) are accessing regular community based support at an early stage of need. Families have increased protective factors. Referrals from the Youth Offending Team for counseling reduces involvement of young people in crime and anti social behavior. Young people’s confidence is improved which impacts positively on their personal safety. 3. Enjoying and achieving: Increased participation of difficult to reach C&YP in learning activities through WLAC’s early intervention therapy groups such as Action Drama, or those at risk of bullying and low self esteem attending groups such as Mighty Me. Vulnerable children at risk of underachieving emotionally, socially and at school are helped to make a positive transition to secondary school through such services such as WLAC’s Cool Moves group. 4. Making a positive contribution: Children &Young People are enabled to develop positive relationships with others and helped to express their views in a socially acceptable way. This enables them to participate more in school and to be included in the wider community. They are supported to stay out of trouble, by maintaining and developing positive life choices. 5. Achieving economic well-being: Young people are equipped with skills and experiences to reach their full potential. They are better able to take advantage of the opportunities ahead of them and are empowered to access education, employment and training by taking up college places or returning to school. a brief financial breakdown: Professional staff payroll and expenses: 59,350 Administration: 11,125 Office rent/service charge : 7,125 Telephone and internet: 800 Furniture etc.: 125 Postage and stationery: 928 IT, IT support and computer equipment: 625 Fundraising: 4,600 Publicity & Communications: 1,950 Central costs: CEO payroll, audit, etc.: 5,913 TOTAL: 92,540
