Venture Trust works with partners across the UK to help young homeless people aged 16 to 35 in their transition towards independent living. The combined effects of a history of homelessness, multiple deprivations and insecurities often leave young people vulnerable, excluded from education, training, employment, and without the lifeskills or role models necessary to break their cycle of exclusion.

    Situation

By joining our ‘Transitions to Independent Living’ programme, participants have the opportunity to take part in a 10 day, wilderness-based personal development course, focused on boosting their lifeskills, self-confidence, employability and stability. During the programme, they are introduced to concepts such as problem solving, consequential thinking, responsibility and accountability, barriers to change, and setting, reviewing and revising goals. These skills can help participants directly address the choices, behaviours and issues in their lives, and to make positive steps forward. All participants leave Venture Trust's course with individually tailored action plans, designed to help them to make the most of their new skills in the next stage of their life. This has proven benefits; three months after completing the course, 75% of participants had improved their employability. Encouragingly, this had translated into 64% of participants being in employment, education, training or a volunteering position.
