    Situation

In Nepal, where 50% of the population lives on less then US$1 a day, education is an expensive commodity for many rural communities. In rural Nepal, literacy rates are extremely low at 11% and a third of children who satrt school at the age of six will have dropped out by the age of 10 years due to poverty. CAIRN's first step is to build schools and libraries in rural village communities. However, even then, many families are still unable to afford the cost of education. CAIRN Educational Awards alleviate the financial burden of education on the poorest families by providing the essential educational supplies. £60 a year will help get a child to school by providing them with all the educational supplies and funding their school related fees. Through the awards, we will increase school enrollment, retention, attendandance and eventually literacy rates of our recipients. CAIRN's goal is to have provided 15,000 CAIRN Educational Awards by 2014 (200 new recipients each year). It costs £6,000 to send 100 of the poorest children to school through CAIRN Educationals Awards.
