We would like to run a social enterprise at our Day Centre in order to generate much needed funding for the centre, get our clients involved – giving them new interests and new skills, and preparing our clients for the job market.

    Situation

We would like to employ a worker for 2 years. Their role initially would be to research possible social enterprise ideas and undertake feasibility studies. They would then be key in finding funding to launch the project and for the first few years running costs. The worker would work with our staff and clients to get the project off the ground and to organise training to enable our clients to get involved. The key idea behind the project is to: 1. Generate an income to support the day centre 2. Give the clients a new interest, so they can spend their time well, learn new skills, gain ambitions and have “something to get up for” 3. Give those clients that take part a sense of achievement and a feeling of “giving something back” 4. Get clients “job ready” for entering back into the employment market. We currently have a garden area, which one of our clients took under his wing. He spends most of his time looking after the garden and making it nice for the rest of our clients. He told us that this project has turned his life around. He now has something to live for and he feels as though he is helping others. We want the social enterprise to enable this feeling to spread to others. The cost for 2 years is £60,000. This is 2 years wages for a worker to lead on this project, and an apportionment of costs for office space, lighting, heating and any resources that they may need.
