This programme aims to inspire young people to be leaders not followers, to find their individual self and to be proud of who they are. We work with groups of young men and women to enable them to identify issues around identity, diversity and self esteem which affect their lives and explore ways in address them positively. Young people learn about responsiblity, citizenship and are encouraged to learn about themselves through life changing debates and challenging experiences.

    Situation

This project is aimed at supporting young people making the transition from youth to adult. Sessions are run for girls and boys groups with specialist workers who mentor the young people through a period of 3-6 months. Specialist speakers and workshops encourage the participants to address issues which are pertinent to the group, for example sexual health awareness, drugs awareness, appreciation of diverse ethnic cultures, gang culture, employability, lack of confidence, issues with careers/ education. The young people learn to question, debate, discuss and explore new ideas in informal, safe environments. When trust is established the group is encouraged to plan, fund raise and manage a group trip which will provide a new learning experience. This gives the participants new self confidence, new transferrable skills, increased communication skills, team building experience and often insipres them to overcome barriers to new opportunities in the future. They often form valuable relationships to youth workers which develop into on going mentoring.
