    Situation

Since the 1997 introduction of Universal Primary Education, Uganda has experienced a massive excess demand for affordable secondary education. After a twenty year rebel insurgency, Northern Uganda is now experiencing relative peace and stability but just 7.5% of young people in the northern district of Kitgum are enrolled in secondary education. PEAS has been founding secondary schools in Uganda since 2002. Our schools are built using donor funding and then run using local revenues which include minimal fees, government subsidy and income from agricultural projects. A new PEAS school costs just £75,000 to build but it runs from its own revenues indefinitely. These new schools will have a huge impact on access to education in one of the poorest areas in the world. Through, volunteer placement, the implementation of our proven systems and procedures and professional development grants, PEAS supports local staff to provide high quality, relevant education at an affordable price.
