We want to provide a new ‘hybrid’ cardiac theatre, the first of its kind at a UK children’s hospital. Here we’ll be able to perform surgical procedures and keyhole techniques simultaneously, reducing the number of operations that children need – and their lengths of stay in hospital.

    Situation

Almost one in every hundred children is born with a heart problem. Congenital heart defects are the most common of all life-threatening abnormalities. A significant number of children require life-saving open-heart surgery, often in the first weeks of life. Without this surgery, less than one in ten children with serious heart conditions will survive.

    Solution

Birmingham Children’s Hospital has one of the busiest Children’s Heart Centres in the UK, and it is upgrading its existing Cardiac Unit. We want to take the opportunity to provide the first ‘hybrid’ cardiac theatre for children in the UK. This allows surgical procedures and keyhole techniques to be performed simultaneously, saving children from extra operations and opening up the possibility of new techniques and better treatments.
