    Situation

Christmas can be a very lonely time for foreign students in UK. They often spend the time alone in their student accommodation when the rest of the country is with family and friends celebrating the Christmas season. HOST UK gives students the opportunity to spend the festive season with hosts who volunteer to invite one or two students into their home. This gives the students the opportunity to practise their English, experience British culture at first-hand and make friends with people they would not normally meet. The British hosts also benefit by learning about China and meeting interesting and intelligent young people. It is a wonderful way of teaching children about China! HOST UK has been able to give this opportunity to thousands of Chinese students over the years. Feedback suggests these visits have changed attitudes and improved their academic results. Students return to China with positive feelings about their time in UK and achieve positions of influence there. We need extra funding to continue our work. It costs £105 to arrange a three-day Christmas visit and HOST UK is able to raise approx 35% from its own contacts. The funding gap is, therefore, almost £70 per student. A gift of £10,000 would allow around 142 Chinese students to have a happy, memorable and life-changing Christmas!
