In 2006 we opened one of our first permanent Comprehensive Care Centres in Casablanca We consider these to be crucial to the growth of Operation Smile; they provide ongoing dental and medical care and treatment, building a network of volunteers and community support. At the same time Operation Smile continues to provide a vital service beyond the Comprehensive Care Centre with regular Projects to other, more remote areas of the Country. Constantly striving to evaluate and perform surgeries on as many children as possible whilst increasing awareness of the possibility of treatment and training as many local practitioners as we can.

Situation
The Operation Smile team of 50-60 international volunteers would aim to treat 120 patients during a 10-14 day Project using 5 surgical tables. These Projects provide a real lifeline to children suffering from cleft deformities. Many children will have been excluded from school by their families who may be ashamed of how they appear; many will have suffered from bullying and will be introverted and lacking social and communication skills. Speech problems are common as are eating difficulties because their deformity has meant they have not been able to develop in the normal way. Operation Smile always brings speech and nutritional experts as part of the Project team to start correcting and re-educating the children and their families. These specialist personnel are a vital part of the continuing education programme that Operation Smile provides. Approx. cost of project £47,500 -including travel,accomodation,food,medical and non-medical supplies. Approx. post op costs £2,250 Total project costs £49,750.
