Skill Force transforms the lives of underperforming teenagers by placing its instructors in schools to deliver vocational training programmes to pupils who are identified by the school as at risk of exclusion, have truancy problems, are disruptive, have low self-esteem and / or who have given up on education. We currently work with 9,000 young learners and want to increase this to 20,000 by 2012. Our target is to work in 5-10% of all schools in Great Britain by then, compared to our current 450 nationwide.

    Situation

Almost 20% of 18-24 year olds are not in employment, education or training (NEET). 30,000 young people fail to gain any qualification at school, and 10,000 are excluded. Each NEET will cost the country approx. £97,000 during their lifetime and we aim to lower this figure by undertaking preventative work with young people. Skill Force utilises the instruction skills of mainly ex-Service instructors to work with 14-16 year olds who are underachieving at school, helping them to re-engage them with their education. Pupils on Skill Force programmes show improvements in attendance, attitude to school and rates of exclusion. We instil a culture of discipline and respect into learners, which in turn inspires them to achieve. 93% of students, who were tracked after completing the Skill Force programme had a positive outcome of employment, training or further education. This is a higher proportion than for all pupils in the country. Given that Skill Force is working with some of the lowest achievers, this is powerful evidence of the effectiveness of the Skill Force model. With your help we can reach even more young people in the future. Please contact us for more information on 01623 827651 or enquiries@skillforce.org.
