    Situation

This project aims to lay the foundations of a proper understanding of tinnitus by exploring potential causes at multiple stages of the auditory pathway, with the goal of developing strategies for early diagnosis, for identification of susceptible individuals, and for design of potential therapies. Human experiments will probe the ear’s normal response to noise. It is hypothesised that measurable disturbances of cochlear status such as can be induced by noise give rise to tinnitus and that instability in a cochlea’s normal recovery process identifies individuals who are potentially susceptible to tinnitus. A dedicated Fellow in Tinnitus Research is needed to link investigations into potential therapies targeted at different levels of the auditory pathway, whether to alleviate the symptoms, or to abolish the causes, of tinnitus.
