    Situation

Motivation Motivation works to improve quality of life for those with mobility disabilities in developing countries. Disabled people are among the most disadvantaged people in the world, often excluded from all aspects of everyday life, including education, employment, health care, and family and community activities. The need– rehabilitation in Sri Lanka Motivation needs funding of £5,000 for equipping the rehabilitation centre in Kandy so they can provide physiotherapy as part of their services for disabled people. Motivation already funds a Physiotherapist so the skills are available, the equipment is the urgent requirement. The centre also provides prosthetic and orthotic services, producing over 100 devices a month. A illustration of how important physiotherapy services are can be seen by the story of Sentooran who is a 17 year old school boy who fell from a tree on 12th December 2008 and had a severe spinal injury. Sentooran was assessed by the Physiotherapist and found he had an ‘incomplete spinal injury at T3 T4 level’. This meant that he had the potential to receive rehabilitation to increase his mobility. Unfortunately there is limited equipment and facilities such a tilting table, manual therapy bed and Bobath plinth to treat/rehabilitate patients with spinal injuries are currently not in the clinic. Therefore it was not possible to rehabilitate him fully, and there are no alternative rehabilitation centres nearby. However the centre were able to improve his sitting balance, improve posture and ensure his mobility by providing an appropriate Motivation wheelchair. This funding request is for equipment that would make a significant difference in cases such as Sentooran’s; with the right therapy he could have learned to stand and walk again.
