    Situation

This investigation:  will use the quantitative and qualitative research findings to identify a range of structures that can provide an adequate response to areas of need  will actively involve people with Down’s Syndrome in the research and its implementation  will involve Down’s Syndrome (NI) staff, families, carers and volunteers  will seek comprehensive information and comment from all groups that are involved in quality of life provision for people with Down’s Syndrome – social services, GPs, schools and teachers from primary, secondary and 3rd level colleges, employers, day centres etc.  Increased life expectancy is highlighting the needs of the 40+ group and their carers. A separate part of the investigation will concentrate on the strengths and weaknesses of present services for this group and identify the role that DSNI can play in ensuring best practice.  Forward planning by parents/carers is taking on a new importance in securing best quality of life issues for people with Down’s Syndrome. This investigation will examine the implications of this as part of its remit.
