Please help us to continue offering support and information to children and their families who have experienced or are anticipating the death of someone special. Despite our best efforts we are running out of funds, £100,000 would ensure that we would be around for the next two years.

    Situation

In the last year alone (2007) we have seen over 130 bereaved children and their families living in our local area of Plymouth. The main part of our work is to run a short term group programme for bereaved children and their parents/carers. We use lots of creative activities to help children express feelings of grief, share their memories of the deceased loved one and explore effective ways of coping. The group provides a way of meeting other children in a similar situation therefore reduces the sense of isolation and fostering a peer support network. In recognition of our changing local community, we have developed our service to offer support to children from asylum seeking and refugee families. These children have experienced multiple losses and trauma. In addition to the therapeutic work we have fun! For example we go out on trips to an adventure park and have a party at Christmas time. We also raise awareness about the needs of bereaved children by providing training to other professionals who work with children and young people. We are a small organisation that employs two full time staff, three part time staff and rely on the kindness and energy of lots of volunteers. Ultimately our aim is to promote healthy grieving and happy memories.
