Nanban works with children alone and at risk on the streets in Madurai, the second biggest city in Tamil Nadu, Southern India. For more than a decade the organisation has been providing a safe and friendly environment to these vulnerable children, offering a better future.

    Situation

    Providing outreach workers and emergency shelter, Nanban have contacted 516 new children in the past year, who have gone on to receive healthcare and counselling, including awareness education in child rights, enabling them to become confident, empowered individuals. They have a very sound model of home placement and of these children 156 were reunited with their families. Contact is maintained with the family for 6 months post reunification to ensure both child and family are coping. Nanban also operate a vocational training programme. All courses are available to children living at the shelter and consist of motor mechanics unit, which now has a recognised ITI (Industrial Training Institute qualification), & a bakery which trains and employs older boys. In addition, training for girls in driving skills, and spice production, empowering them to contribute to the income of their families.
