Our big idea is to use film & mobile phones to reclaim new technology for the prevention of abuse. The project will work with at-risk young people and experienced filmmakers to produce ‘adverts’ – creating an innovative viral campaign for changing attitudes that tolerate violence in relationships.

    Situation

Online technologies & mobiles are increasingly used for abusive ends in young people’s relationships. A 2009 NSPCC study found that, for many girls, these technologies represent a means by which boyfriends keep them under constant surveillance. This reinforces Tender’s own findings during workshops with over 4,000 young Londoners, that while new media provide a positive platform for young people to engage with their peers, they are also used to extend abusive control in a relationship.

    Solution

Tender’s young participants & artists have identified an innovative way to harness new technology for positive change. They aim to raise awareness of: •the early warning signs of abuse, before a relationship becomes violent •where to seek specialist help •challenging common myths, e.g. victim-blaming The idea arose: use short films to create a viral campaign on mobile phones, to engage & educate other young people. They will by-pass glib & easy answers to the real issues young people face.
