Situation

16-25 year olds are at the highest risk of experiencing abuse in relationships of any other age group. The consequences of domestic abuse include mental and physical health problems, financial hardship, social isolation, unwanted pregnancy, substance misuse and homelessness. Many young people state that they don't have the chance to talk to adults about relationships at home or at school. Tender's research shows that 75% of young people experiencing abuse never disclose to anyone.

Solution

Our project has been developed to respond directly to young people's needs by using a youth-led approach. By providing safe environments for open discussions, we begin to help young people to identify and avoid abusive relationships. As young people are more likely to tell a friend than an adult if they're at risk, we use drama and arts based exercises to help them to know how to respond supportively . These techniques increase empathy and allow young people to rehearse safe responses
