Situation
'Respect' is a 10-12 week course for young people aged 14 who are identified by schools as being in danger of dropping out of school and potentially into crime. EABC goes into a district within the county and approaches 3 schools in areas of recognised poverty and disadvantage. Each school nominates 20 students who attend two selection days at our outdoor centre in Upminster where they undertake a rafy odf challenging activity designed to test team skills, ability to take instruction and a commitment to the project. Thhe 60 students are reduced to 15 who move forward to a series of evening classes covering life-skills such as bullying, peer pressure, anger management, drugs etc over 9 weeks. If they stay the course then tthey are taken away to our centre in the Lake District where all the lessons learnt are put into practice in remote conditions. Successful students are then signed up to the Bronze section of the Duke of Edinburgh Awaard Scheme and linked to one of our clubs. Progress in schools and in the clubs is then monotored. TO date 1000 students have joined the initial elements of the course with 220 going on to complete the programme.
