    Situation

With political instability and a collapsing economy Zimbabwe is often in the news for all the wrong reasons. Whatever we may think of the politics, it is often those on the margins of society who suffer the most and not least those orphaned by HIV and AIDS. Many orphans live in child headed households, or are cared for by elderly grandparents; they frequently have no income and rely on the charity of others to survive. In a country where many are reduced to surviving hand to mouth, communities struggle to support such orphans, whilst the stigma and ignorance associated with HIV and AIDS leave many isolated and neglected. ACET Zimbabwe has been actively involved in communities around Buluwayo, the second city in Zimbabwe for many years. Whilst many international NGO's have been forced to withdraw form the country, ACET has remained to offer care and support to the communities it serves. We arev seeking support for its work in nutrition and education support to AIDS orphans. Those most in need are offered a nutritious breakfast and support for school fees, enabling them to continue their education, offering a long term route out of poverty and dependance. It costs, on average, £30 a year to provide a breakfast every day and school fees and the programme currently supports over 2,000 orphans, a figure it woild like to increase if the funding was available.
