    Situation

Some of the biggest barriers in the battle agianst HIV and AIDS are ignorance and stigma. Local leaders, health professionals and project workers lack sufficient information about how HIV is spread and treated and the impact of AIDS. Many are scared of the virus and those infected or affected by it. Ignorance leads to stigma, with many people reporting that they are ostracised or rejected when their HIV positive status becomes known. There is a desperate shortage of informed, accurate, accessible and authoratative HIV and AIDS materials and the book 'AIDS and You' is designed to address this problem in communities, where it may be the only source of informnation. Written by leading writer and futurist Dr Patrick Dixon, and currently being fully revised, based on 20 years of practical experience, 'AIDS and You' will be republished in late 2009. We aim, over the next three years, to distribute 500,000 copies to projects and communities dealing with HIV and AIDS. Many of the recipients work in some of the poorest communities in the world and cannot afford to purchase the book. We aim, therefore to offer 'AIDS and You' free, asking for payment only from those who can afford to offer it. ACET also intends to translate the book into 30 local languages, making it still more widely available. In the last three years, 300,000 copies have been sent and translations made intro 25 languages. Each translation costs in the region of £5,000 and each copy approximately 50p. ACET receives numerous testimonies to the effectiveness of the materials and this project aims to ensure that thousands more communities have the information and resources they need to tackle HIV and AIDS.
