    Situation

The D R Congo has been racked by civil unrest and political instability for many decades. The majority of the population live in poverty, whilst the HIV and AIDS pandemic is growing rapidly and largely unchecked as the Congolese government lacks sufficient resources to tackle it, whilst many international NGO's judge the country still too dangerous to work in. ACET has a new programme in the country, with teams in the capital Kinshasa and main eastern city of Goma. Workers offer 'Lifeskills' education in schools and churches to young people together with voluntary testing and counselling for people who fear they may have become infected with HIV. Young people, particulatrky girls, are vulnerable to contracting HIV, either as sex workers or through early marriage or sexual abuse. The 'Lifeskills' programme offers the facts about HIV and AIDS to young audiences, encouraging them to make safe and wise personal choices as they become sexually aware and active. The work is based around local churches and volunteers from the congregations are trained and encouraged to work in their local schools and communities to deliver 'Lifeskills' lectures and workshops. Each workshop for up to 100 young people, costs, on average, £20, being the costs of training, materials and particularly transport in this vast country. The 'Lifeskills' programme is growing rapidly and we are seeking support to reach out across the country to a new at risk generation every year.
