SeeAbility's eye 2 eye Campaign aims to improve eyecare and vision for people with learning disabilities. Regular and effective eye tests are rare among people with learning disabilities therefore visual impairment often goes undetected - leading to deteriorating eyesight, dependence and isolation. In some instances, poor eyecare can lead to preventable blindness.

    Situation

Janet, who has a learning disability, moved to a general nursing home with her elderly mother when they were no longer able to live alone. When her mother died, Janet remained at the nursing home. Four years ago, it was discovered that Janet has cataracts. Due to limited communication and a lack of understanding of visual impairment and learning disability, staff simply ‘forgot’ to address this - denying Janet a sight saving operation. The eye 2 eye Campaign is a £2 million national Campaign to provide: 1. eye 2 eye Community Development Officers across the UK. The eye 2 eye Community Development Officers give direct help to people with a learning disability and their families ensuring that they are fully prepared and supported through an eye test or eye surgery. The eye 2 eye Development Officers also provide learning disability training to eyecare professionals ensuring that they are fully equipped with the expertise and specialist testing tools to offer accessible eye tests. Thanks to the eye 2 eye Campaign, many people with a learning disability have had an eye test for the first time in their lives - with your valuable support we can fund more eye 2 eye Development Officers to reach more people across the UK. 2. Look Up, a unique, national information service on all aspects of eyecare for people with learning disabilities, families and professionals. Launched in June 07, Look Up is in the form of a website - www.lookupinfo.org - telephone helpline and training and consultancy. Your support can help us develop Look Up, the only specialist eyecare information resource for people with learning disabilities. With your help, we can achieve better eyecare and regular sight tests for people with learning disabilities.
