We all know that one of the most pressing issues facing UK service providers in the field of learning disabilities is how best to provide support and care to an ageing population across a variety of settings. We also know that a critical element in providing this care is ensuring social care workers are confident and fully trained to meet the needs of people who develop dementia. But we want to do more. We want to bring alive some of the information and advice we give in training through the use of visual aids and footage that focuses on all the fundamental aspects of good dementia care. We want to enhance learning by giving accessible, inspirational images and ideas. Our dementia conferences are often powerful experiences for delegates and we want the staff we train to also experience this by ‘bringing the speakers with us’ through the use of film. We want them to hear about gold standard care, appreciate the experiences of family carers and see how their services can adapt their environments to make them dementia friendly. We feel that by providing a training session that uses a variety of methods and media we can respond to all learning styles and equip more front line staff with the skills to provide effective, responsive care. However, the DVDs would not only be about developing programmes. Many services are finding it very hard to fund training through their ever decreasing budgets. These DVDs would also be stand alone resources in themselves; a practical toolkit for staff to use in the workplace, in their own training and in the day to day lives of the people they support. It is clear through our work that our training is having an impact on the lives of people with Down’s syndrome and dementia. Our delegates tell us that they feel they have gained a greater understanding and appreciation of the experience of dementia and that they feel inspired to adapt and improve their practice. These DVDs will help us to continue to provide quality teaching and learning to our colleagues in the field. We also hope they will enable more people with Down’s syndrome and dementia to age in place and enjoy a better quality of life.
