Tanzania is experiencing a reversal in development due to HIV/AIDS. The adult mortality rate has increased considerably due to HIV-related illness and there are soaring numbers of orphaned and vulnerable children. The Rainbow Centre provides education, health, nutrition, welfare and psychosocial support to orphaned and vulnerable children and people living with HIV/AIDS, offering security now and hope for the future.

    Situation

The Catholic Diocese of Moshi has been involved in the struggle to help alleviate the suffering of those living with HIV/AIDS since 1992 when it established the Rainbow Centre, offering guidance on prevention of HIV infection as well as care and support services to the local communities. The Centre identifies and supports orphans mainly with school fees, school materials, medical care and foodstuffs. The project co-ordinators follow up on children’s progress in school and during the school holidays organise social and play activities for the children. As well as this practical support the Centre provides spiritual/pastoral guidance and psychosocial support to the children so they will be better equipped to deal with trauma and loss, and adult responsibilities later in life.
