    Situation

BACKGROUND WAA has a successful history of delivering engaging projects for women, designed to increase accessibility and inclusion to the arts, including Journals (2006/07), Postcards From Home (2007/08), Creative Conversations (2008/09) and currently Creative Imprints (2009). Women consistently identify positive benefits from their experience of WAA projects - including a greater sense of wellbeing, confidence, self-expression and a greater involvement in cultural and community life. KEEPSAKES – a community arts project 2009/10/11 This year will see the launch of Keepsakes, a new fifteen-month project working in partnership with community organisations, aimed at supporting the most vulnerable women to access vibrant and engaging arts activity in their local communities. The project will be facilitated by professional artists and will deliver 40 high-quality, multi-media workshops for over 300 participants. Women will have the rare opportunity to respond to the archives of St Fagans National History Museum, where participants will be asked to explore their reactions to art and cultural artefacts; evoking memory, imagination and emotion. The project will culminate in a five-month exhibition at St Fagans (Sept 2010 – Jan 2011). WAA’s community arts exhibitions have gained a distinctive reputation for producing dynamic, high quality shows, which are accessible and inclusive for participants and visitors alike. Involvement in public exhibitions has great benefits for participants. Women are able to present their achievements to family and friends, gain encouragement, confidence and a sense of collective pride and ownership. SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS WAA works with some of the most excluded and isolated women in Cardiff and Barry, including women with disabilities, refugees and asylum seekers, minority groups, travellers and unemployed women. We work closely with grass-roots community organisations to address the many physical, economic, social, cultural and educational barriers women face when accessing the arts. ACCESS & EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES WAA is committed to Equal Opportunities and provides appropriate access to all its community arts projects, including the provision of free crèche, translation, transport and disability access a. Without this provision many of the most excluded women would simply not be able to participate in arts activity. TOTAL COST FOR THE PROJECT = £39,816 WAA has secured £15,000 from the Arts Council of Wales but needs vital match funding for Keepsakes to be delivered successfully.
