    Situation

NCH Westwood School is for pupils with severe behavioural, emotional and social difficulties. The school is run according to the therapeutic principles of NCH, the children's charity. The idea of the "Wild Westwood Play Area" is to develop the school’s external accommodation in to recreational/leisure areas, which will be used by both the pupils at Westwood School and surrounding community groups which support children and young people. The external area would be used for three purposes and divided in to sections accordingly. These areas would include a covered seating area, an area for aerobic exercise, and one for adventurous activity. In line with government legislation, and the Every Child Matters agenda, the principal aim of the development will be to use positive play in order to make a direct and significant impact on both the emotional and physical wellbeing of those who used the facilities, recognising that learning takes place in a social as well as classroom context.
