Building a rock catchment dam will provide clean water to approx. 45,000 head of livestock and 1,500 pastoralists. This will enable new grazing areas to be utilised and reduce tensions where resources are in scare supply. These sturdy and low-tech dams require minimal maintainence.

Situation

In many parts of Africa water is in desperately short supply and drought occurs only too often – devastating communities as crops, animals and even people perish. Turkana is a semi-arid district in northern Kenya, bordering Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda. Those inhabiting the region depend on their herds of camels, cows, donkeys, goats and sheep for survival. This remote and rural area is prone to cyclical droughts which decimate the population, livestock and wild fauna.

Solution

We propose building a rock catchment dam on a dry riverbed to contain the seasonal water before it dissipates. The dam will to be built between two settlements and it will hold sufficient water for fifteen months, in a region where there is currently none at all. The dam will allow the Turkana tribes to travel further afield with their animals, enabling them to reach good grazing lands.
