    Situation

The da Vinci robot was developed to overcome limitations of minimally invasive surgery. Potential benefits to patients include: Shorter hospital stay Less blood loss and fewer transfusions Less pain and scarring, and faster post‚Äêoperative recovery Quicker return to normal activities

    Solution

Instead of directly moving the instruments the surgeon uses a computer console to manipulate the instruments attached to multiple robot arms and the computer translates the surgeon’s movements, which are then carried out on the patient by the robot. This allows the surgeon to use the most delicate of procedures.
