    Situation

Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children has recently confirmed the effectiveness of the ketogenic diet in helping to control and prevent seizures in children with drug-resistant epilepsy. The diet is also recommended as a treatment in the NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) Guidelines. Sadly, due to lack of NHS funding this diet is not widely available in the UK - we are the only epilepsy charity in the country funding these specialist dieticians. This treatment has a huge positive effect on children with drug resistant epilepsy. To date we have funded six ‘Daisy Garland Ketogenic Dieticians’ who all work within NHS hospitals - 1 at St George’s Hospital in London, 2 at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital in London 1 at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, 1 at The Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and 1 at The Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. Funding is usually allocated for a maximum of two years on the understanding that the hospital apply for continued funding from their hospital trust thereafter. So far this has proved a success at St. Georges Hospital and Guy’s and St Thomas’. The other 3 hospitals hope to follow suit. Each Dietitian costs approx £26,000 per annum, we are currently raising funds to keep our Plymouth, Nottingham and Bristol Dietitians in place for their second year, the Diet has been a huge success in these locations, each Dietitian has a large number of children successfully on the diet and more referrals waiting to start.
